Important Information regarding application process at Sheriff’s Dept.

The Onslow county sheriff’s office has made changes to the application process for a Concealed Handgun Permit. The application can be downloaded from the sheriff’s website or below on this page.

Currently, all military and civilian applicants will fill out the same application packet. While the sheriff’s office no longer requires a dual residency ID or a command letter, command letter requirements are specific to individual commands and all active duty military applicants should check with their command to see if a command letter is required to take to PMO and request a background check prior to submitting an application to the sheriff’s department.

It is my understanding that PMO is requiring a command letter granting permission to perform the background check but the sheriff does not require a command letter. PMO should provide the applicant with a document authorizing the sheriff’s department to proceed with the CCH application. Also, if you have an out of state driver license, you must take a utility bill or tax bill with your name and Onlsow county address proving residency. The utility or tax bill must have the same same name as your out of state driver license. An approved Concealed Carry Handgun class must be completed prior to any of the above. The sheriff’s department is currently scheduling appointments within a couple of days of an appointment request and returning a permit within 2 weeks.
